South Cumberland is an expansive area that reaches from Altamont to Dunlap in Tennessee. It is full of niches, trails, and falls.
Savage Gulf is this huge gulf in the middle Tennessee f the mountain at the base of the Cumberland ridge.

The entrance is off Hwy 399 just inside the Sequatchie county line.

There are four or five trails from this ranger station. Most go to hike to the falls which is about 1 1/2 miles from the station. The hike has only slight un and down grades and but for several tree roots, it is pretty smooth.
Two swinging bridges are bit tenuous for first timers but the are well anchored and safe.

The woods is full is mushrooms for the curious. But don’t touch. This one we saw on or August visit.

We often stop at the cascades because it shares the delightful roar of rushing water and you can wade in it safely. Kids enjoy it too. And easy climb down to the rocks.



It you are lucky there will be a cache of butterflies 🦋. We found blue ones this time.
Today we did not go all the way to falls. There were lots of hikers and we knew it would be packed. More on that later.
